What a BYD needs from its battery

BYD has gone from rare to common on UAE roads in a short time, mostly with plug-in hybrids and full electrics. The main pack gets the attention, but it is the small low-voltage battery that decides if the car switches on.

Battery type and size

Many current BYD models use a 12V lithium iron phosphate battery made for the car, not a conventional lead-acid unit. Some models and older petrol cars take an ordinary DIN battery, usually H5 or H6. It has to be confirmed from the VIN, model by model.

Worth knowing before fitting

Where the car has a 12V lithium battery, it cannot be replaced with a lead-acid one of the same size, and a flat one is normally recovered by boosting through the jump points. Send the model and year first so the right equipment comes out.
