Signs you need it

  1. 01 The AC blows air at outside temperature, with no cooling at all
  2. 02 The compressor does not click in when you press the AC button
  3. 03 An AC part was replaced or a pipe was disconnected
  4. 04 Oily residue is visible on an AC pipe joint or the condenser
Quick answer

AC gas filling is a full regas: the old refrigerant is recovered, the system is vacuumed and leak tested, then refilled with the exact weight of refrigerant the manufacturer lists. It is the right job when the system is empty, has been opened for repair, or has never been serviced. Gas does not wear out, so an empty system has a leak that needs finding.

How it works

How Car AC Gas Filling works

  1. 01

Tell us the car and year so we bring the right refrigerant type

  2. 02

The machine recovers the old gas and pulls a vacuum

  3. 03

If the vacuum holds, the system is charged by weight. If not, the leak is located first

  4. 04

Vent temperature and pressures are recorded and shown to you

What the job covers

  • Recovery of whatever refrigerant is left
  • Deep vacuum to remove air and moisture, with a hold test
  • UV dye or electronic leak detection where the vacuum drops
  • Compressor oil added to the correct quantity
  • Recharge by weight and vent temperature reading
Range Rover and Land Rover

On a Range Rover

Older Range Rovers use R134a refrigerant and newer ones use R1234yf, and the two must not be mixed, so we read the label under the bonnet before connecting anything. Models with a rear climate unit hold more refrigerant and have long underfloor pipes, which is one more place for a leak to hide.

Questions

Car AC Gas Filling questions

More questions answered

What is the difference between gas filling and a top-up?

Filling empties the system, tests it and recharges to an exact weight. A top-up adds gas to a system that still works but has dropped a little.

How long does a full regas take?

About 45 minutes to an hour when the system is sound. Finding and fixing a leak takes longer and depends on where it is.

Will you refill a system that you know is leaking?

We will tell you it is leaking and where. Refilling a system that is known to leak just releases the gas again, so the repair comes first.
