A BMW watches its own battery closely. When the charge drops, the car starts shedding loads and shows an increased battery discharge warning well before the engine fails to turn.
Battery type and size
Most BMWs built in the last fifteen years take an AGM battery, usually H7 or H8, and the big saloons and SUVs can go up to H9. The exact capacity is tied to the options on the car.
Worth knowing before fitting
A new battery has to be registered to the car, and coded as well if the capacity or type changes. Skip that and the alternator keeps charging as if the old, tired battery were still there. On most models the battery lives in the boot, on the right side under the floor.
