A Range Rover Velar with stop/start needs an AGM battery, and the exact size and rating depend on the engine and model year. The technician confirms the specification from the label on the existing battery or from the VIN, fits the new battery, then resets the Battery Monitoring System (BMS). Mild hybrid Velars also carry a 48V lithium pack, which is a separate component and is not part of a 12V battery change.
Why a Velar needs an AGM battery
Stop/start is the reason. Every time the engine cuts out at a traffic light, the 12V battery runs the air conditioning fan, the screens and the lights on its own, then restarts the engine. An AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery is built for that repeated cycling. A conventional flooded battery is not.
The Velar also carries a heavy electrical load even when parked. Keyless entry, alarm, telematics and control modules all draw a small current. AGM copes with that better and recovers charge faster once the engine is running.
How the correct specification is confirmed
There is no single Velar battery. The capacity, cranking rating and case size vary with the engine and the model year, so quoting one figure for every Velar would be guesswork.
The reliable sources are the label on the battery already in the car and the VIN. Before a technician is dispatched, we match one of those against the correct replacement. Sending the details below on WhatsApp is enough.
- Model year and engine, for example P250, P400, D200 or D300.
- A clear photo of the label on the current battery, if you can reach it.
- The VIN from the registration card (Mulkiya) or the base of the windscreen.
- Your location and any warning message showing on the dash.
Why the BMS reset matters
The Battery Monitoring System must be told that a new battery has been fitted. It tracks the age and condition of the battery and adjusts charging to suit. Without a reset, it keeps treating a new battery like the worn one it replaced.
The usual results of a skipped reset are stop/start staying unavailable, charging that does not suit the new battery, and battery warnings that return within weeks. The reset is done with a diagnostic tool at the car and takes a few minutes.
Mild hybrid Velars: a 48V pack plus a 12V battery
Mild hybrid Velars such as the P400, D300 and D200 have two separate electrical stores. A 48V lithium pack supports the engine and recovers energy under braking. A 12V battery still runs the lights, locks, screens and control modules.
A mobile battery replacement deals with the 12V battery only. The 48V pack is a high-voltage component that is not swapped at the roadside and should never be jump started. If the fault points to the 48V system, the technician will tell you so instead of fitting a battery you do not need.
What the mobile replacement visit looks like
The work is done where the car is parked, at home, at the office, in a basement or at the roadside. Arrival is typically 20 to 35 minutes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, at any hour. Delivery and fitting are free, and the battery carries a warranty of up to 24 months.
- The technician tests the existing battery and the charging system first, so a healthy battery is not replaced.
- The specification is checked against the label before the old battery is disconnected.
- The new AGM battery is fitted and the terminals and the monitoring sensor clamp are tightened properly.
- The BMS is reset with a diagnostic tool and stored battery faults are cleared.
- Charging voltage is checked with the engine running, and the old battery is taken away for licensed recycling.
Signs the battery is close to the end
The first sign is usually stop/start switching itself off. The car disables it to protect a weak battery, long before the engine struggles to crank. A "Low Battery" message after sitting with the ignition on is the next one.
In UAE heat a battery typically lasts 2 to 3 years, so age alone is a reason to test. A test takes minutes and tells you whether the battery needs charging, replacing or nothing at all.
