Scratch repair removes or hides a scratch using the lightest method that works: machine polishing if it sits in the lacquer, a touch-in if it has reached the colour, and a local respray if it is down to primer or metal. Depth decides the method, not length. A quick test is to run a fingernail across it, and if the nail catches, polishing alone will not remove it.

Scratch Repair questions
Can every scratch be polished out?
No. Polishing removes a thin layer of lacquer to level the surface, so it only works on scratches that have not gone through the lacquer.
Will a touch-in be invisible?
From normal standing distance it is much less visible and the panel is protected. Up close you can usually still find it, and a respray is the invisible option.
Does a deep scratch need fixing quickly?
On steel panels bare metal will rust, so yes. Aluminium and plastic panels do not rust the same way, but exposed edges let the paint lift over time.
