A pre-purchase inspection is an independent mechanical, electronic and bodywork check of a used car, carried out for the buyer before the deal is done. The inspector goes to the car, at the seller address or a showroom, and reports what is wrong, what is worn and what has been repainted. It gives you grounds to negotiate or to walk away.
On a Range Rover
On a used Range Rover the costly items to check are the air suspension where fitted, the cooling system, the transmission and the electronics, and a full scan often shows stored faults the dash is not displaying. Ask the seller for service records and confirm whether the car is GCC specification, since imports from colder markets may be specified differently.
All Land Rover modelsWhat the job covers
- Full fault code scan of every control unit
- Paint thickness readings on every panel to find repairs
- Engine, gearbox, cooling and leak inspection
- Brakes, tyres, suspension and underbody check
- Road test and a written report with photos

Pre-Purchase Inspection questions
Can you inspect a car at the seller address?
Yes, that is the usual way. The seller needs to agree to a scan, a road test and about an hour of access.
Is this the same as the registration test?
No. The registration test confirms the car meets roadworthiness rules. It does not tell you about repaint, stored faults or parts close to failing.
Can an inspection guarantee the car has no problems?
No inspection can. It reports the condition on the day and catches most of what matters, but hidden internal wear cannot always be seen without dismantling.
