The four things that decide the cost
The battery itself is most of the bill, and batteries differ far more than they look. Two black boxes of similar size can be built very differently inside.
- Technology. AGM costs the most to make, EFB sits in the middle and flooded costs the least. The car decides which one it needs, not the budget.
- Size and capacity. A larger case with more amp hours contains more lead. A big SUV battery costs more than a small hatchback battery of the same type.
- Brand tier. Premium European brands sit above mid-tier and value brands for the same size.
- BMS reset and access. Cars with a Battery Monitoring System need a diagnostic reset, and some cars need trim removed to reach the battery.
Why a Range Rover quote differs from a small saloon
A Range Rover sits at the top end on every factor. It needs an AGM battery, in a large size, usually from a premium brand, with a BMS reset afterwards. A small saloon without stop/start needs a compact flooded battery and no reset.
