Choosing a battery for the Mercedes-Benz W124
The W124 was built from 1984 to 1996, before start-stop was common, so most examples run a conventional maintenance-free battery. Age matters more than mileage on these cars: cables, terminals and the alternator are worth checking at the same visit.

What a Mercedes-Benz needs from its battery
Most modern Mercedes models take an AGM main battery, usually H7 or H8, with H6 on the smaller A-Class and CLA. Where it sits depends on the model. It can be under the bonnet, in the boot or under a seat.
Many models carry a second, much smaller auxiliary battery that supports stop/start and the gear selector. An "Auxiliary Battery Malfunction" message points at that unit, not the main battery, so the two should be tested separately.
