Choosing a battery for the Kia Opirus

The Opirus was built from 2003 to 2010, before start-stop was common, so most examples run a conventional maintenance-free battery. Age matters more than mileage on these cars: cables, terminals and the alternator are worth checking at the same visit.

What a Kia needs from its battery

Most Kia saloons and crossovers take DIN batteries in H5 or H6, with H7 on the larger engines. Some older models use JIS sizes such as 80D26L. Versions with idle stop and go usually need AGM.

Newer Kias have a battery sensor clamped to the negative terminal that feeds the charging system. It is easy to damage with a careless spanner, and accessories earthed directly to the battery post go unmeasured, which confuses the charging.
